In a shocking discovery, a large number of homeless people were found living in makeshift caves along the Tuolumne River in Modesto. The six-meter-deep underground cave is accessed through makeshift stairs dug into the hillside, but its unstable structure and unsanitary conditions have raised concerns. Over the weekend, the Modesto Police Department, in conjunction with local volunteer group 9.2.99, began a major cleanup in the area of Crater Avenue and Dallas Street.
The cave was a hub for vagrants and illegal camps, leading to safety and hygiene concerns. His HEART team at the Modesto Police Department, along with park rangers, CHAT, and abatement personnel, notified those in these caves of upcoming cleanup efforts. Support and services were provided to assist with the transition.
A joint effort successfully removed his 7,600 pounds of trash, which included two truckloads and a trailer full of trash. Police thanked the community for their cooperation and recognized the extraordinary dedication and hard work of the 9.2.99 organization in ensuring the clean-up operation was a success. Furniture and equipment found in the cave During the cleanup, various items were discovered in the cave, including a table, a box filled with essentials, and a shelf filled with food and spices. Volunteers like Chris Guptill from Operation 9-2-99 said they were surprised by the amount of items brought into the cave.
