Time magazine has named President-elect Donald Trump its Person of the Year for 2024, marking the second time he has received the prestigious title. His first recognition came in 2016. The announcement was made on Thursday, following last year's honor, which went to pop star Taylor Swift for 2023.
Time’s Person of the Year title is awarded to individuals or groups who have had a significant impact on the world, whether positive or negative. While many U.S. presidents-elect have been honored, it is not always guaranteed. For instance, in 1952, Queen Elizabeth II was chosen over President-elect Dwight D. Eisenhower, and in 1968, the Apollo 8 astronauts, the first humans to orbit the moon, received the title instead of Richard Nixon.
Trump, who has made numerous appearances on Time’s cover—sometimes in less-than-flattering depictions—has long viewed the Person of the Year honor as a major achievement. He once called it his "holy grail," and in 2015, he publicly criticized the selection of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, mentioning it at rallies and on Twitter. When he was chosen in 2016, he expressed his pride in the honor during an interview with NBC’s Today show.
Time’s Editor-in-Chief, Sam Jacobs, explained Trump’s selection by highlighting his remarkable political comeback, the unprecedented political realignment he sparked, and the profound way he has reshaped both the presidency and America’s role on the global stage. Trump overcame numerous challenges, including six corporate bankruptcies and multiple criminal cases, to secure a victory over Vice President Kamala Harris. His victory makes him the first convicted criminal to take office, the first president to be twice impeached and reclaim the presidency, and at 78, the oldest person ever to assume the office.
Harris, who could have been the first Black president, was one of five finalists for the title.
