The current conservative government has initiated reforms. However, many members of the ruling New Democracy party will reject the move. Even the country's powerful Orthodox Church opposes the move.
Despised this strong opposition, the opposition is ready to pave the way for passage of the historic law. A vote to decide the future of family relations in the country is expected to take place later on Thursday.
Greece is set to become the 17th European Union member state and 37th country in the world to legalize adoption by same-sex couples. Politically, the bill is likely to cause a split in the ruling New Democracy party. Dozens of party members are expected to oppose the move, despite Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' support.
Following the announcement of the bill, many LBGTQ groups took to the streets of Athens to celebrate this development. A simple majority of 300 members would pave the way for the bill to pass. Opposition parties and small socialist parties have united in support of the law, which declares the process a mere formality.
One of the opposition parties, the Syria Party, has a gay leader, Stefanos Kaserakis. Opinion polls in the small European country show that a majority of Greeks support same-sex marriage but oppose surrogacy.
